When They Outgrow Their Bedroom

Hi Friends! I feel like it has been a minute since I last posted on here. The last couple of weeks have been super busy plus I have been trying to get back to full health after being sick.

If you have been following me for a while, you might have seen a sneak peek at the back wall of my daughter’s room back in December as we worked towards a room update for her. We started this project well over a year ago and it has been a slow labor of love but we are finally approaching the finish line so I thought I would share more pics plus how we came up with the design.

First, let me just tell you, because she is my only girl, her former room was covered head to toe in pink. The walls had a chair rail with two different shades of pink above and below. Her furniture was white but everything else was pretty much pink. When it came time to think about an update for her, one of her requirements was that it not be drowning in pink. Before we could start, she had to agree to get rid of her hundreds of beanie boos and stuffed animals that had pretty much taken over the space before. While it was a gradual process (they sat in limbo in the garage for a few months), she finally decided it was time.

When we invested in her furniture years ago, we always knew we wanted it to last as long as possible. Her bed is a full size which gives us the luxury of letting her grow into it and potentially have it for several years to come. We started with the idea that we wanted to keep the space simple. We would likely use the back wall as the main design through either wallpaper or paint and keep everything else pretty simple around it. The bedding is white and came from Target. We knew if we went with simple white bedding, we could introduce pops of color through the pillows, even a little pink. I also knew I wanted to keep her room with the gold accents even though several other rooms in the house had gone more silver. It just felt more feminine and soft against white walls.

From there, we started collecting accessories as we saw them, including a cute round wire shelf that would be perfect opposite her wall. Most of the items came from Target or Nordstrom Rack as I saw them. When we looked at the side wall next to her bed, she wanted to string together some lights and pics of her friends but when we tried laying it out, it just wasn’t looking right. My husband took on a little DIY project and took a black frame we had, painted it gold and strung the lights and pics through there. Inexpensive project that added just the right personal touch to that area.

Once we had most of the accessories, we still had the empty space on the left side of her bed where the previously mentioned stuffed animals used to reside. We started looking at hanging chairs but they were heavy and really too big for the space, until my mom found a great macrame version that was absolutely perfect. It added more character to the room while making it the perfect place for her to hang out with friends for years to come.

I couldn’t be happier with how the space turned out and I know she loves it too. Final step is new carpet but that will come with the rest of the house. For now, I’m sure I will keep tweaking and adding things to the room here and there but overall, it is a bright, open space perfect for a growing girl.
