Living Life with a Little Adventure

If you know me, I thrive on routine and can sometimes fall into becoming a creature of habit, but with a little nudging, I am usually open to trying something new. Inevitably, I usually end up loving it and am so grateful I stepped out of my comfort zone.

Now, you might think that taking a new hiking trail is hardly an adventure but when you become used to the local trails around you, taking a chance on unfamiliar territory can be somewhat uncertain. We recently had a chance to take the 4.5 mile hike up to Red Rock Canyon at Whiting Ranch Park in Lake Forest. My mother-in-law recommended it as it is listed as one of the top hiking trails in Orange County, CA. It’s also known to be mountain lion country so you can see a slight hesitation but when my 77 year old mother-in-law wants to check it out, you don’t say no.

To say we were impressed with this trail would be an understatement. From beautiful scenery and shaded trail areas to the breathtaking red rocks at the top, it did not disappoint. Located in the foothills off Portola Parkway, there is parking at the bottom of the trail or in the nearby shopping center. The trail is easy to locate and navigate through with signage signifying the levels of each trail as well.

The hike begins and ends with shaded, green lush areas of trees and a small creek that instantly transforms you out of the hustle and bustle of OC into a whole new world. The trail itself is easy to navigate with just a few small steep inclines and like I said, my almost 80 year old mother-in-law was able to complete it successfully. I love trails that are more evenly paced rather than large steep hills followed by flat land. About halfway up is when you see the map of the various trails and locate the route to Red Rock Canyon. There are numerous other hiking trails ranging from moderate to difficult and there are also trails for mountain bikers as well, which is what my son chose.

Once on the path to Red Rock, there are clearings to the sun with gorgeous trees and flowers throughout. The final portion is a little narrow and rocky but we were able to make it though without any trouble. And the view at the top is 100% worth it! You suddenly feel as if you have stepped into Arizona and a whole new environment. The surrounding mountains are breathtaking and it’s the perfect spot to catch your breath and snap some photos to capture the moment.

On our way back down, in addition to more wildflowers, we stumbled upon a family of deer just sitting up on the hill in the grass. It was such a sweet, peaceful moment that we definitely won’t forget. I would highly recommend getting an early start in the summer to ensure you don’t get too overheated and make sure you pack the essentials, water and sunscreen. Fortunately for us, the mountain lions stayed away and we discovered a new trail we will definitely repeat again.
