DIY Gratitude Jars

First and foremost, I will start this blog post with a disclaimer that I do not consider myself a crafty person at all. In fact, I’m sure there are many others who might recommend better ways to make these but I loved the idea and how they came out so, of course, I had to share with all of the novice DIYers like myself.

A few weeks ago when I was brainstorming on Mother’s Day gifts, I knew I was likely going to have to get creative not knowing what the stores would have and I wanted to be budget conscious. Plus, I always feel like Mother’s Day is the perfect time to give a meaningful gift, especially this year.

When my daughter and I sat down to think of a DIY project, I remembered that she and a friend wanted to paint mason jars at one point but they never got a chance to before we went to the “stay at home” orders. I suggested we try it and maybe try to create some homemade vases that we could fill with flowers and gift for Mother’s Day.

I did some research on Pinterest and found everything from the simple techniques to the grandiose. We wanted to keep it simple and keep our supply costs down so we went with the chalk paint option. I will say people do some amazing work with mason jars when you start researching on Pinterest. Nonetheless, we figured out a game plan and ordered the following supplies for curbside pick-up at Michaels.

Package of the small size mason jars

White chalk paint

Chalk paintbrush

Chalk paint black marker

Twill ribbon

Jars, paint and brushes

Once we collected all of our supplies, I started getting worried that filling all of them with flowers may or may not be easy this year depending on what was open and how easy they were to find. Needless to say, CA opened up floral stores just a few days before Mother’s Day but we already had an alternate game plan in mind.

The main objective we had when we started out with the project was creating something that would brighten everyone’s spirits since this time has been so strange and sad in a lot of ways. With flowers being an unknown, we came up with Plan B.

Painted jars

One of the things that I enjoy the most about my social media account is finding inspirational quotes and verses that I can reflect on. We decided that we would go back and type out all of my favorite quotes, print them out, cut them into individual papers, fold them and place them inside the jar. The objective of the jar would be to open one every day during this time and hopefully it would bring some joy, positivity and maybe even some inspiration to someone’s day.

We worked on the project over a couple of weekends and underestimated the time to cut all of the verses but in the end, we had them ready in time for Mother’s Day morning to give to some special women in our lives. As we gifted them and explained the jar’s purpose, each person took out their first quote and shared it. It was so nice to be able to share something that brings me so much joy with some of the people I love the most.

One of my favorite things is when someone takes the time to share something with me that is kind and thoughtful and I love doing the same for others. Coming up with gift ideas can be hard but if you get creative with it, you can create something really special that hopefully will be remembered for a long time to come.
