4 Wardrobe Staples Worth Investing In

I’m guessing that one of the home projects most of us worked on during quarantine was a closet clean out. With the change of seasons, I recently went back in again to reassess how long it had really been since I had worn some pieces.

I finally did a larger purge of my dress collections since many of them I had been holding on to for years. It got me thinking that there are some pieces that you switch out season to season (t-shirts, sweaters, even jeans in some cases) and others that you can hold on to and know that you may revisit them each year. Here are 4 wardrobe staple items that are completely worth investing in.

I. Dresses-I don’t wear dresses a lot but I like to keep a collection on hand for those inevitable moments when you just need a dress. Whether it’s for a special event, holiday or even a professional meeting, having a supply of dresses to fall back on is key. I recently unloaded quite a few dresses that I had been holding on to for well over 5 years in the hope that I might wear them again. When I really looked at them and thought about the last time they were worn, I made the decision to cut bait.

The great thing about dresses is that you don’t have to spend a lot to build up this section of your closet, nor does it take a large collection. Just having a good mix that you can rely on in a pinch is all you need. And don’t forget, if you only have one dress, make sure it is the classic LBD that works for any occasion.

2. Leather, Faux Leather or Suede jacket-This is a piece that will easily last for many years. My black leather jacket is well over 10 years old and I still pull it out on occasion. I recently purchased a faux leather version with gold hardware at a fraction of the price of a real one. I also have a couple of suede moto style jackets that I grab when I need to dress an outfit up for the night. They are so versatile for dresses, slacks or even jeans and a cute blouse.

3. Knee high boots-Whether you prefer them with a low heel or something a little dressier, a pair of knee high boots take any outfit and give it some edge. Whether they are worn with a skirt, dress or even over jeans, they just take the look to the next level. Unless you purchase a super trendy pair, for the most part, a good pair of knee high boots should easily last 3-4 seasons.

4. Black pumps-I know it may seem silly with most people working remotely these days but a good pair of classic black pumps can last from season to season and will never fail you in a fashion emergency. Plus, pumps no longer are just for the working girl, they are perfect with denim for date night or to add to a holiday party look. Some classic designer styles that can usually be found at Nordstrom Rack are Michael Kors, Sam Edelman or, of course, Calvin Klein.

As usual, while I know when to invest in certain wardrobe pieces, I still rarely ever pay full price. I take advantage of big sales like the Nordstrom Anniversary or Half Yearly sale or I look at Nordstrom Rack as an alternative. Abercrombie has had some great dresses but I’ve also found some budget friendly options at Old Navy and Target that are great quality too. And don’t forget, if you are investing in classic, timeless pieces, you will definitely get your money’s worth. Happy Shopping friends!
